Image Optimization

Posted on June 3rd, 2006.

Google has image search engine. If you don’t know that, you’ve missed the most comprehensive image search on the web, which provides you many beautiful and relevant pictures according to your search. If you still don’t have any idea, Google Image search is located here.

The search results of Google Image also can be your source of traffic. When you do a Google Image search, you will get a page of results showing the thumbnail version of the images. Below the images, you will see the description of the image size, file type, and the webpage, which the image is. Google also shows some text that is near the image on the web page where the image was found. But in some case, the text is based on ALT text.

Inside AdsenseIf you were to click on the image to see the image better, you would be brought to a framed page where Google’s information along with a link to view the full size image is in the top frame and in the bottom frame is the actual page of where the image comes from.

The bottom frame will generate traffic to your web site. Take this idea for an example. Say you are interested in Sony Ericsson Z710i cell phone and want to see how it looks like and type it into Google Image search. You would get a result of images and, if you happen to notice that an image comes from a web site called ww.cellphonereviews.com, you would click on the image because you want to know peoples’ view about the cell phone. On the next page in the bottom frame where the web page of the image is located you see some great reviews and tips about cell phone. Then you might visit the web site to see what else they come across.

Optimizing the images for a web site if done correctly can gain traffics to your web site. But you must first know how does Google rank for images?

The factors took into consideration when determining images rankings are below:

  • Image File Name
  • ALT Text of Image
  • Text Surrounding the Image
  • Page Title and other Web Page Factors

How do you optimize your web site for Google Image Search? Easy! Just make sure that the file name of your image reflects what it is really about. Instead of 00001a.jpg name it sony-ericsson-Z710i.jpg because 00001a.jpg have nothing to do with sony ericsson. I’ve read somewhere saying that Google reads sony-ericsson as “Sony ericsson”. Therefore, use hyphens when naming an image with more than a word. I’m pretty sure that no one will search for sonyericsson with no space in between.

Make sure that your ALT tag accurately describes what the picture is about using the keyword you want to optimize for. For example for the sony-ericsson-Z710.jpg picture you could write an alt tag like this. (alt=”Sony Ericsson Z710i”). Make sure that the text surrounding the images contains the keyword you want to shoot for. If you have a picture of a Sony Ericsson Z710i, it is natural that the web page will have text about it, so little effort is needed here. And, if you really wanted to optimize for it, make sure your keyword is in the TITLE tag and URL of your web site.
